Workspaces

How workspaces are created, staffed, automated and closed in your organization.

For the user steps (browse, join and create), see Organizations and workspaces. What each workspace setting means is on Workspace settings.

To set up an organization from the start (invite people, group them, give the group a workspace and make it the default), follow Set up your organization, which has the setup video.

Who creates workspaces

By default the Member role can create workspaces. To make workspace creation admin-only, take the Create workspaces permission off the Member role in Settings > Organization > Roles (Org roles tab). People without it can ask an admin to create a workspace for them, through whatever request route your organization sets up.

Owners, members and roles

The creator is the owner and adds the team. Each person has one of four roles (Viewer, Member, Admin, Owner); what each role can do is configurable. See Roles.

Add and remove people automatically

Your identity provider can add and remove people automatically (SCIM). Sign-in and SCIM are set up at the platform layer; see Enterprise controls.

Manage workspaces through the API

Every workspace action (create, read, update, delete), members and invites are available through the platform API, so custom hooks can be built, for example one workspace per engagement.

Close a workspace

To close a workspace today, its owner or an organization admin deletes it (Workspace settings > General > Delete workspace), or members’ access is removed. Deleting a workspace deletes it and its items, and can’t be undone.

Planned: archiving a workspace at close. It is not available yet.
